March Speaker Meeting

Comet Lovejoy’s colourful coma

Newbury Astro member, David Boyd, recorded this spectrum of Comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy on 6th January 2015. The spectrum has been artificially coloured, and above it is the spectral profile showing the intensity of light emitted at each wavelength across the spectrum.

As someone that’s owned a few different types of telescope over the years the best telescope is generally one that gets used. No point having some fancy telescope that links up to your computer if it takes over an hour to set up and is too heavy to lug around!

68 Years On, The First Photo of Earth From Space

68 years ago today, a group of soldiers & scientists in New Mexico retrieved a steel cassette from the wreckage of a re-purposed V2 rocket. The contents were a world first - pictures of Earth from space.
